Bolivar Middle School Students Perform Well at Math Contests

Students from Bolivar Middle School have had a busy two Saturdays as they have competed at the Southwest Baptist University Math Contest on January 31 and the Ozark Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition on February 7. Jen Wilhelm, sixth grade teacher at Bolivar Middle School, and Dr. Kevin Hopkins, from SBU, have been working with the students twice a month after school to help prepare them for contests like these.

On Jan. 31, there were 308 students in grades four through eight competing at SBU from about 25 schools around the area (schools such as Rolla Junior High, Nixa Junior High, Lamar Middle School, Nevada, Fairview R-XI, Greenwood Lab School, Logan Rogersville Middle School, and Wheaton Schools). Attending from Bolivar Middle School were Cora Stimpson and Megan Austin, 6th grade, and John Sanders, Abby Warren, Sean Vote, Sera Stanek, and Bryce Breshears, 7th grade, and Jonathan Trout, 8th grade. The sixth graders took three individual tests and a team tests. The seventh and eighth graders took two individual tests and a team test. John Sanders received honorable mention on 7th grade Sprint and eighth place on 7th grade Target, Abby Warren placed seventh on 7th grade Sprint, Jonathan Trout placed eighth on 8th grade Sprint and sixth on 8th grade Target. The top ten individual scorers in 7th grade, limited to two per school, participated in the Countdown Round. John Sanders and Abby Warren from Bolivar received Honorable Mention in the 7th grade Countdown. Jonathan Trout qualified to participate in the Countdown Round, but had a conflict in the afternoon and was unable to participate.

On February 7, Drury hosted the Ozark Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition. Twenty schools sent about 160 students (grades 6-8) to the competition. The top ten scoring individuals participated in the Countdown Round and qualified for the state competition which is March 14 in Columbia. The top four scoring teams (Middle Years Scholars Program, Greenwood Lab School, Branson Junior High, and Nixa Junior High) also qualified for state. The next ten high scoring individuals who had not qualified for state by some other placement were informed that they also qualified for state. Jonathan Trout, Sean Vote, and John Sanders from Bolivar were in this qualifying group. Also attending the competition were Bryce Breshears and Megan Austin.

In addition to the March 14 state MATHCOUNTS that three students continue to prepare for, the students will continue to prepare for the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional competition. They will attend the April 11 competition at SBU. Top scorers there will qualify for the MCTM state competition to be held April 25 in Warrensburg at the University of Central Missouri.
